Imperial Castle

Taiwan city was also called "Imperial Castle", "Chihkan Fort" or "Anping Fort". Built in 1624 by the Dutch and completed in 1634. Its first name was "Orlande City" and later it was re-named as "Fort Zeelandia". Because Chinese people called the Dutch the Red-hair. Therefore they called this Fort as "Castle for the Red Hair". After WWⅡ, it has been called "Anping Fort" until now.

During the period of occupied by the Dutch, this Fort was the capital for the politics and economy. From Ming Dynasty to Cing Dynasty, Anping Fort was no longer important and the government demolished the bricks for other usage.

During the period of Japanese occupation, in order to build the dormitory for the Customs, Anping Fort had been totally destroyed. They built a square ladder-style platform at original location. In the center of the platform, they built a western-style house. That is what we know Anping Fort now.

Over three hundred years passed, today the oldest fort of Taiwan has left us remains of the semi-circular forts, remains of the city wall, watchtower, exhibition and the park for the heritage wall for us.

Anping Warehouse

Adjacent to the Tait & Co., it was one the warehouse of Tait & Co. in the beginning. Considering the bricks were gotten from Anping Fort for the construction of this house, it might be built between the end of 19 century and the beginning of Japanese colonization. To be a warehouse of Japanese salt company. What you see now should have been re-constructed by Japanese.

After the restoration of Taiwan, it was become the warehouse of Taiwan Salt Corp.. It was fallen into disuse and the pagoda trees grown in there. Over half century, it formed a special scene with trees wind around the house. Because of this special scene, artists stopped here for some art activities. But without supported by government, it was terminated. Until Tainan Government want to carry out the National Anping Harbor Historic Park Project, it was then included into this project. After repaired in 2004, one can cross this tree house now by the wooden path with a childlike image to discover this funny space.

Shennong Old Street

Shennong Old Street used to be called Beishi Street, which is the often considered the best preserved street in Tainan. It is the keystone of the Old Five Channels Cultural Zone and is among one of the must see areas of Tainan.

This street is part of an area that was the busy working class zone during the Qing Dynasty. The canals coming in from the ocean made this a densely populated port area where goods were transferred, stored, sold, etc. This was Tainan’s lifeline to the outside world and roads led directly from here to downtown. The street is named after Shennong, an ancient Chinese ruler who is considered to be the forefather, and deity, of Chinese
